Dr. Berg's Foot Facts

Posts for tag: Smart sock technology

With a fresh new year in front of you, you're determined to stay in shape and foil any new running injuries. Last year you were out of commission for three months and you don't want to relive that debacle.

With a little technology, you may not have to.

The latest gadget is a pair of the smartest smart socks that I've heard about from a company called Sensoria.  Embedded in the socks are special sensors that grab information from your run and sends them to a computerized ankle bracelet that analyzes the data.  Pretty cool, right?

That's not all. The device connects to your smart phone displaying all kinds of data and a Siri-like coach uses that data to tell you how you're running in real time.

One tech reviewer, Gregory Ferenstein (writes for "The Verge") tried them out. Although he found some hiccups in the system, he still plans on using this fitness tracker to make his running better and less injury prone. I also spoke to Amy Lia at Super Jock 'N Jill in Seattle who mentioned that the socks can be quite cumbersome. She's looking forward to that and other improvements in the device.

With all this good news you'd think I'd eventually be out of business. But the truth is even if you've gone to the best running trainer or use a Siri-like fitness tracker like Sensoria, this won't totally eliminate your foot problems.

Why?

Many of patients who run have foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, and stress fractures. Although it might be nice if altering your running style would totally eliminate your risk of developing these conditions, it's just not the case.

Everyone has a different foot type. Some foot types will make you more prone to injury. Fortunately these can be addressed through use of inserts or custom orthotics and other techniques to ensure that you have less chance of experiencing these problems again.

Conclusion.

Get the benefits from technology, but don't expect miracles when it comes to saving your feet.
