You may not to go through the extremes to get the right shoe like Seahawk kicker Stephen Hauschka does, but getting the right shoes can make a huge difference in your life. In today’s Seattle Times, Hauschka was highlighted because he needs the perfect shoe to keep making those game winning field goal kicks. In order to get the right shoes he’s been scouring Ebay since the shoe manufacturer has discontinued Nike Vapor 7s, the shoe that keeps him winning for the Seahawks.

As your Seattle podiatrist, I advocate bringing an extra pair of shoes along if you must squeeze your feet into high heels for the holidays. But it’s important to have the right shoes all year long to keep them in tip top shape.

Here are some tips to ensure the shoe fits:

Heel Height Matters

At this time of year you’re probably doing a lot of walking in boots to get your holiday shopping done. However, getting your heel height right is something to pay attention to all year long. Remember to keep the heel height one inch or lower, but that doesn’t mean wearing UGGs. UGGs are totally flat and these can cause as much or more pain than a high heeled boot particularly if your prone to getting heel pain.

Shoe Must Match the Activity

Although you probably aren’t kicking field goals, you have lots of other activities you engage in that need the right shoe. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, choose a shoe with a rounded toebox and lower heel height. If you run, go to a store like Super Jock and Jill that specializes in helping clients choose the right shoe. Save flip flops for lounging on the beach during that cold weather vacation or when going into a public shower to prevent toenail fungus, but once summer arrives in Seattle avoid walking for long distances in this casual wear shoe.

Avoid Buying Shoes Online

Ok, I know you can buy shoes on Ebay and other online shoe stores to get a great deal. Maybe this works out for Seahawk Hauschka. However, it’s important to get your feet measured to get the right fit. Our feet frequently increase in size as we get older. And Ebay shoes are often used shoes and will have a wear pattern that may promote problems in your feet. If you do live shoe shopping, keep in mind, there should be at least an index finger of width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Nordstrom, Shoe Advantage, and Wooley Mammoth are stores you can trust to measure your foot correctly.

At the Foot and Ankle Center of Lake, we also provide assistance in getting you the right shoe for your foot. Call us at 206-368-7000 or request an appointment online.
