Are you getting back into hiking? What you don't want is to end up with a black, bloody, and painful toenail. How do you prevent this from occurring?
- Be sure that your feet are measured and that your shoe size is correct for your feet, both in length and width. It's important to prevent your foot from sliding around in the shoe because it's fitting you incorrectly.
- Go into a store where your feet can be measured, where you can try them on, and someone can check to see whether your shoes are the right length and width for your feet. They should check to ensure there is enough space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
- Lacing your shoes properly can help with fit. Everybody's got different-sized feet. Just because you pull on the laces doesn't mean your foot is properly positioned in the boot. Lacing can prevent your foot from pistoning forward in the shoe. If the toes hit up against the end of the shoe, it can cause a painful, loose, and black toenail. You can also develop an ingrown toenail infection.
