If you're living with thick, yellow, or discolored fungal toenails, you already know how embarrassing they can be and how frustrating it is when nothing seems to work. You may have tried over-the-counter creams, home remedies, or even prescription oral medications, only to watch the fungus come back.

You're not alone. And there are real reasons why so many treatments fall short.

As a podiatrist, finding treatments that actually work for my patients is a priority. So let me walk you through what we know, what doesn't work, and what's finally making a real difference.

Drawbacks of Using Oral Medications for Fungal Toenails

Let's start with oral anti-fungal medications — historically one of the most common treatments. They can be effective for some patients, but they come with real drawbacks. Because they travel through the bloodstream and are processed by the liver, they carry potential side effects and can interact with other medications. For many patients, they're simply not an option — and others understandably prefer to avoid them altogether.

Topical Medication Only Falls Short in Treating Fungal Toenails

That's led a lot of people to try over-the-counter, topical creams instead. Unfortunately, most have been disappointed. These products rarely penetrate all the way to the nail bed, which is critical to eliminate the infection at its source.

Advanced Lunula Laser for Treating Fungal Toenails

Our office has been treating fungal toenails with laser therapy since 2012. We were generally pleased with our results — but in 2025, I discovered a newer technology that takes things significantly further. It's called the Lunula Laser, and it's changed the way we treat this condition.

Here's what makes the Lunula laser different.

  • It's non-thermal — meaning it works without heat, so there's no pain and no downtime.
  • Each treatment takes just 12 minutes per foot.
  • Uses 2 lasers to destroy the fungus.
    • The first laser creates a targeted chemical reaction that kills the fungal cells directly.
    • The second stimulates your body's own immune response by increasing circulation to the nail bed.

After incorporating the Lunula laser into our practice in 2025, we've been very encouraged by what we're seeing. Many patients are noticing clearer nail growth in as little as three months after their first round of treatment.

Why Comprehensive Treatment for Fungal Toenails is Important

But here's something important we've learned after years of treating this condition: laser treatment alone isn't enough. Fungus doesn't just live in the nail.

  • It also hides underneath the nail
  • In the surrounding skin
  • Inside your shoes

If those areas aren't treated, reinfection is almost inevitable — no matter how good the laser is.

That's exactly why we developed a comprehensive treatment program designed to address every part of the problem.

Our Laser Treatment Program combines:

  • a series of Lunula laser sessions
  • advanced topical medications to treat both the nail and the surrounding skin.
  • antimicrobial shoe spray to eliminate fungus living inside your footwear (one of the most overlooked sources of reinfection).
  • a therapeutic foot soak as an additional layer of protection.

Follow-up care is built into the program as well. Because toenails grow slowly and fungal infections can recur, we schedule follow-up treatments at three and six months, and we provide patients with the education they need to keep their nails healthy as they grow out.

When patients commit to this full program, we're seeing success rates in the range of 80 to 90 percent. For many of them, it's the first time they've had real, lasting results.

If you've tried everything and feel like nothing has worked, I want you to know that this is genuinely different. The combination of Lunula Laser technology and a comprehensive treatment plan gives us better tools than we've ever had before — and patients are finally seeing the clearer, healthier nails they've been hoping for.
